What are Swiss Army shoulder straps?
Shoulder straps -- known as Achselschlaufen or Schulterpatten -- are the rank insignia attached to the shoulders of the service uniform. They display the rank and branch of service of military personnel.
In the Swiss Army, ~147,000 active members wear shoulder straps on their service and dress uniforms. The background colour indicates the branch (red = Infantry, yellow = Armour, green = Grenadiers, black = Artillery). Rank symbols (chevrons, stars, oak leaves) indicate the grade.
